Department of Music

As part of the School of Education and Music, the Department of Music prepares you to integrate your Christian faith with music theory and practice. The Department of Music offers on-campus Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music and Music Education, with minors in Christian Worship and Music. You’ll gain real-world experience, communicate about music effectively and faithfully, apply what you’ve learned in practical settings, perform, and graduate with everything you need to make a difference through music.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Music is to provide a quality music curriculum within a Christian environment. To accomplish this mission, each program within the Department will: (1) integrate various aspects of the Christian faith into each course, attempting to instill within the student an awareness of the practical outworking of biblical principles; and (2) equip the student with the competency necessary to excel in a variety of musical settings.

Music Ensembles

Opportunities abound in the areas of choral, vocal, instrumental, piano, and organ music. Our professors combine excellent teaching with the kind of focused attention that inspires students to do their very best. Our performing ensembles consist of music students as well as interested and talented students from other academic disciplines.

Our performing ensembles include Concert Choir, Wind Ensemble, Chamber Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble. Scholarships for participating in music ensembles are available.

Music Scholarships

All prospective music majors are required to audition for acceptance into the Department of Music. The audition is an opportunity to present studies or compositions that best represent a student’s performance capabilities. The top students to audition will be eligible to receive the Joan and Thomas Phillippe Young Artist Award. The winners of the Young Artist Awards who enroll at Southern Wesleyan as music majors will receive a scholarship award that may be renewed annually during four years of study subject to their continued advancement as determined by the Department of Music.

Student Productions

The Department of Music at SWU is proud to produce annual musicals for a variety of audiences in the upstate of South Carolina. Past productions include Broadway favorites such as Beauty and the Beast, The Sound of Music, and The Little Mermaid. Student productions take place in the 1,000-seat Newton Hobson Chapel Auditorium and provide audiences quality, affordable, professional performances in an educational setting.
