Workers apply “SWU Blue” colored sealer on the new track at Southern Wesleyan University in Central. The facility, expected to be ready for practice in early 2014, will be the venue for future Track and Field meets as well as soccer matches.

New track gets state-of-the-art surface

Getting the blues isn’t always a bad thing.

The sight of “SWU Blue” is a welcome one for Coach Greg Thiel of the new track and field program at Southern Wesleyan University, as well as for Chris Williams, director of athletics. Applying the Warriors’ team color is a finishing touch for the new 400-meter, eight-lane track, located near the university’s entrance at S.C. Highway 93.

“The construction of the track and soccer complex has been a blessing to our university as it has generated a buzz not only on our campus, but also for recruits and within the local community,” Williams said.

According to Thiel, the track’s surface consists of asphalt, covered by a rubberized layer, which is sealed with a colored sealer before the top layer is applied. Also under development are dual runways for the long and triple jump, two shot put rings and a hammer and discus area.
